Obituary of Garnet E. Zimmerman
Big Rapids - Garnet E. Zimmerman, 88, of Big Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2014. He was born October 22, 1925, in Detroit, the son of Frederick and Helen (Ewing) Zimmerman. During World War II, Garnet served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre as a radioman 2nd class. Following his discharge, Garnet graduated from Ferris Institute in 1949. He was employed at Ferris State University as associate professor in the Radio, Television, and Broadcasting department for 35 years, and was also employed at WBRN radio station as chief engineer and announcer for 50 years. Garnet was awarded the Ferris State College Distinguished Teacher award in 1967, and is also remembered as a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by sons Matthew (Jean), Mark, and Charles; daughter-in-law MaryBeth; 5 grandchildren, Jill Robertson, Kelly (Jason) Ferry, Lori, Stuart (Heather), and Jennie Zimmerman; 5 great-grandchildren, Hannah and Quentin Fraley, Elise Robertson, Owen and Easton Zimmerman; and a sister Myrl Baker. Garnet was preceded in death by his wife Margaret (Robart) Zimmerman, a son Daniel, a brother Ewing, and a sister Iris Redinger. A memorial service for Garnet will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 11, 2014, at the United Church of Big Rapids, with Rev. Jon Fleming officiating. Burial will be in the Highland View Cemetery. Garnet's family will greet friends after 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the church. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the United Church, with envelopes available at the church or the Mohnke Funeral Home, where arrangements are entrusted..
