Obituary of Robert Edwin Follendorf
Robert Edwin Follendorf, 92 POWAY -- Robert Edwin Follendorf passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2012. He was born October 1, 1919 in Madison, Wis., son of Edwin W. Follendorf and Adelia Gausewitz. Robert attended high school in Minneapolis, Minn. He served in the US Marine Corps. He began his career in Camp LeJune, North Carolina, served in Korea, World War II Shanghai, China, was one of the "Chosen Few," and was a member of the First Marine Parachute Regiment. After working up the enlisted ranks, Bob served 21 years and retired as a Captain. He continued retail sales for David/Neil's Shoe Store and retired again from the Oceanside Post Office after serving 12 years. Bob received the Grand Cross Of Color Service Award for the National Order of Rainbow for Girls in 1965. He was a life-time member of the Oceanside Elks Club and the Masonic Lodge. His favorite pastimes included fresh water fishing and baseball. He was awarded The Bronze Medal and The Purple Heart while in the USMC and was proud of his service to the Marines Corps and his country. Bob survived his wife, Nell, of more than 38 years, who passed away of cancer in 1986 at the age of 65. He relocated to Poway in a retirement facility where he had made a home. He is survived by three daughters, Vickie, Bobbie, and Beverly. He has four grandchildren, Michele, Theresa, Michael, and Marissa; and four great-grandchildren, Danielle, Alex, Savannah and Nicholas. His ashes will be scattered at sea in Oceanside on January 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. The family will host a reception for close family friends on January 29, 12:00 p.m. in Poway. The family wishes to publicly express gratitude to Hospice for having transitioned both parents at their time of need.
