He was graduated from Middlebury College and Andover Theological Seminary, settled in Congregational ministry at Gardner, Maine in 1841, compelled by ill health to resign in 1847; removed to Fall River, opened a private school for boys, removed in 1859 to Hopkinton, in 1862 to Easthampton, in 1864 to Oshkosh, Wis., in 1865 to Kossuth, Iowa, settling on a farm at Nevinsville, then to Monticello, Iowa.
