The Descendants of John Heywood

Biography of Joseph Lee Heywood

From an e-mail from Gerald Otis

Joseph enlisted in the 127th Illinois Infantry in 1862 and participated in the siege of Vicksburg and the capture of Arkansas Post (also called Ft. Hindman) in 1863. He became ill and was diagnosed with "consumption" which was probably TB but could have been malaria. He was hospitalized and then sent for light duty to a Dispensary at Nashville, TN. He mustered out in 1865 as a corporal and spent some time with his brother in the Chicago area before moving to Faribault and then Northfield, MN. He worked for five years as a bookkeeper in a lumber yard owned by S. P. Stewart before joining the 1st National Bank. After he was shot, the bank managed to raise $12,602.06 from banks all over the nation for his family. Carleton College, where he was also treasurer, established The Heywood Library Fund and a poem was written in his honor called "On a Faithful Bank Cashier" which appeared in the New York Tribune (I can send it if you are interested). Lizzie May was his only child and she graduated from Carleton College and the School of Music there and subsequently taught music.
